Book discussions are popular

A SIR book discussion activity is a forum where members can come together and talk about books and the reading experience.

The activity typically meets monthly at a common location (library, restaurant, senior center) for a couple of hours. Part of the time is devoted to discussing the book of the month and the rest of the time is for socializing.

Books being read may follow themes or genres. Typically, books to be read are chosen by a vote or the choice is rotated among members. The moderator may ask a question, display a related prop, or ask members to comment on a passage from the book.

This is a great way to encourage yourself to read a book that you wouldn’t ordinarily read on a subject that you wouldn’t ordinarily select. It is also fun to discover other SIRs’ perspectives on a book that you have read.
